Accessorizing 101

Updated: Mar 3, 2022

Accessorizing is the element that brings home design all together. Without accessories, a home can look bland and uninteresting. Accessorizing is the last step in the design process but can be the most crucial if not done correctly. I will be explaining how to accessorize in all the right places of your home and how it is all brought together as a cohesive design.

Adding Color, Layers, and Texture is important when accessorizing your home. But how is this accomplished?

Starting with your color palette will set the tone for the rest of your accessories. If your home has neutral tones on the walls, floors, and furniture, try incorporating bold pops of color to break up

monochromatic tones. In this picture you can see an example on how a pop of color is achieved through accessories in this neutral room.

After color, comes layering. Layering in a space means adding in components in a sequence to create a beautiful design. A good little layering technique I like to use is

First: add a rug that ties in your furniture colors

Second: add window treatments that incorporate the colors in your rug

Third: add pillows and blankets with patterns and pops of color

Fourth: add accessories and art with bold pops of color to create visual interest

The 60-30-10 Rule: How to use it

Diana Hathaway Timmons has an article from "The Spruce" that talks about a great rule of thumb in accessory design. She says, "your 60 percent is the main color for your room. Most likely the 60 percent in a living room would be most of your walls, large accent pieces like area rugs, and perhaps a sofa. The idea is that the 60 percent color anchors the space and also serves as a backdrop for what comes next".

"Your 30 percent is the secondary color. You’ll be using half as much of this color as your main color. So, this could be draperies, accent chairs, bed linens, painted furniture, or even creating an accent wall. The idea is that the secondary color supports the main color but is different enough to set them apart and give the room interest. The real fun comes with the accent color you’ll be adding next."

"Your 10 percent is your accent color. For a living room, this is your throw pillows, decorative accessories, and artwork. For a bedroom, this could be accent pillows on the bed, lamps on the bedside table, and candles on the nightstand. Your accent color can be pulled from artwork in the room, or from a printed fabric on larger items."

Where do I put accessories?

Believe it or not, many people get overwhelmed with the thought of accessorizing their space. There are key areas in every room where an accessory should be placed in a home. Here is a helpful guide:

Rugs: should always be placed directly under furniture

Window Treatments: Hang your curtains towards the top of the ceiling instead of directly on top of the window. This creates a larger more luxurious feel!

Add lamps to end tables, sofa tables, console tables, corners of the room, and ends of sofa. These are great homes for lamps.

Shelves: Mix and match accessories to create contrast on shelving. Following this zig zag sequence shown here creates something visually interesting to the eyes

Pillows: Use a solid color in the back, textured fabric in the middle, and patterned fabric in the front using a staggered sequence. This creates contrast.

Go Green! House plants are a great way to spruce up your space as they add a bit of life to a room. Add house plants to corners, occasional tables, mantles, and window seals.

In this post, I'll talk briefly on wall decor. In a future blog post I'll go more in depth about the details of wall design and artwork, but for now, I'll just touch on the basics.

1. Go big or go home

Oversized art creates a sense of grandness and luxury to the space! It's a great way to fill space on a wall as you see on the picture above.

2. Collage walls are the new trend

Collage walls are the fun new thing in interior design! The use of different size frames and

coordinating pictures creates visual interest. It's great for when you can't decide on one piece of art!

3. You can't go wrong with mirrors

Mirrors create the illusion of a larger room by reflecting off the walls of your space. There are so many shapes, sizes, and colors to play around with when it comes to mirrors!

4. Use Accessories as wall decor

Using accessories such as baskets, macrame, plates, or even plants/botanical elements. Another use of accessories is putting them on floating shelves on your wall!
