Finding your design style...how do you find it? Your design style is the representation and reflection of your personality. People do this through their clothing, physical appearance, and just their overall way of life. But today I'll be talking about finding your interior design style! Your home is one of the largest reflections of you. When people step into your space, they automatically get a sense of who you are as a person, so it's important to find your perfect style. For some people, it may seem difficult to find that style, heck, I feel like I am a reflection of multiple styles sometimes, but I am here to help you figure out how to find what suits your home!
First off, let's start with the 3 Basic Styles of interior design: Traditional, Transitional, Modern.
These 3 styles are what I like to base my client's specific style off, that way it makes the transition easier. Let's talk about what these styles are exactly.
Traditional
A traditional design style features elements that are timeless and comfortable. It's all about the details, such as ornate fixtures, tufted furniture, and decorative trims. Traditional design has a formal feel to it, often incorporating antique furniture, chintz, and florals, and repeating patterns around a room.
Characteristics of Traditional Style:
1. Elegant, European-Inspired Furniture
2. Natural Materials
3. Architectural Details
4. Bold and Timeless Color Palettes
Getting started with a traditional home starts with finding your bold color palette. Incorporate organic patterns like paisleys and chintz in your upholstery. Go out to your local antique shop and find vintage pieces to accessorize your space. Lastly, you can never go wrong with an elegant, oriental rug.
Now, let's move on to the next style...
Transitional
Transitional style refers to the mix of traditional and modern interior design. Bringing together pieces from various design styles creates a singular design that updates the classics with a cohesive, modern feel. It balances luxury with comfort, masculine with feminine, and antiques with new pieces. Transitional design focuses on practicality, neutral tones, and comfortability. It is perfect for those who don't focus on an extremely specific style because transitional can work for anyone!
Characteristics of Transitional Style:
1. Comfortable, Functional Furnishings
2. Neutral Color Palettes
3. Natural Textiles and Materials
4. Feminine and Masculine Characteristics
Getting started with a transitional style starts with a neutral color palette, followed by neutral upholstery selections. Use large, scaled furniture with a comfortable look and feel to it. Choose case goods with more organic lines to bring in the traditional feel. Bring in your pops of color with accessories, rugs, and metal accents to create interest within the space.
Lastly, let's talk about the third style of interior design...
Contemporary/Modern
Modern design is an interior design style characterized by a monochromatic color palette, clean lines, minimalism, natural materials, and natural light. It refers specifically to a historical aesthetic movement that took place during the early to mid-twentieth century. Though it is often confused—or used interchangeably—with the term "contemporary design," modern design is its own distinct style
Characteristics of Contemporary/Modern Style:
1. Minimalism
2. Clean Lines
3. Low, Long and Ergonomic Furniture
4. Neutral Color Palette
Getting started with Modern/Contemporary Style start with a streamlined sectional and minimalist accent chairs. Select sleek, low-profile furniture. Layer a neutral palette with intentional pops of color. Natural materials like wood, bamboo, and stone can add warmth to the space. Add high-polish accents, but remember, do not get too crazy with the accessories, minimalism is key in modern design.
