Out with the carpet and in with the rugs. Area rugs are the new way to spruce up your space without committing long term to carpet in your home. They are a great way to accessorize and bring all the elements in your space together. In my last blog post, I talked about how rugs tend to be over complicated, but I will simplify it by explaining the do's and don'ts when purchasing a rug for your home.
Extend Rugs Under the Furniture
Extending the rug past your furniture is very important for creating visual balance. Your furniture should never be off of the rug. When furniture directly sits under a rug it creates a larger appearance. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you're the front half of your living room
furniture is touching the rug, and that your dining chairs should still be directly over your rug even when pulled out. The diagram to the right is a good representation of what rug placement should look like.
Select the Correct Size
Rug sizes can vary depending on the scale of your space. Always measure your room and the area where furniture will be placed for accuracy. If you do not feel confident in measuring, La-Z-Boy designers can come out to the home at no cost to measure for rugs! Our 3D room planner is also great for determining the size rug you need by determining your square footage and furniture layout. A little tip for rugs is to overestimate. Bigger is always better when it comes to rugs, because having too small of one will just look awkward and out of proportion. Making sure you have equal space between your rug and floor on all sides is a must. This creates balanced, uniformed look.
DO DON'T
Cover High Traffic Areas
Adding runners to your hallways and between your kitchen and island are a great way to add something extra to your space while keeping those areas clean. The look of square and rectangular rugs together in the same household creates dimension overall, plus it's super cute!
Color and Pattern
Color and pattern play a significant role when it comes to selecting your rug. Make sure to select a rug that brings in all your colors and elements in your space. Matching your pillow colors to to your rug to me is the easiest way to create rhythm in your space. If your rug color has blue in it and your accessories are red, it will look like a hot mess! Rhythm is important in design. Here is an example of coordinating the colors in your home to your rug.
This is a great example of pulling in the orange throw blanket and pillows while adding an exciting pop of blue! The traditional pattern also incorporates with the bohemian look within the room. Coordinating your patterns is just as important as coordinating your colors.
This rug is a bad example of rhythm and coordination because the colors do not go with the furniture. There is no green within the rug making it look way off. There is no yellow or gray accents to compliment this rug in particular. The modern geometric pattern also looks awkward with the Queen Anne traditional style furniture.
Here at La-Z-Boy, we have a wide selection of rugs to choose from to compliment any room! If you do not see one you like, we can browse online for the perfect rug for you!
