The Do's and Don'ts of Laying out Furniture

Updated: Dec 22, 2021

You've finally decided to to purchase furniture for your home, and you are so excited to start the process! Don't get me wrong, this process is exhilarating, but you finally get to the store and you are immediately overwhelmed. Furniture shopping, though exciting, can be an extremely stressful experience. Here at La-Z-Boy, we want to make process as simple as possible with the help of myself as the designer and our sales people.

Laying out furniture is easy with the help of our 3D room planner and our wide selection of furniture pieces to suit the needs of every room. Here are some tips on how to get the perfect pieces for your space and making sure they lay out perfectly.

Determine the Space

Rooms come in various shapes and sizes. Determining this will help you figure out what kind of furniture is needed for the space. Here are some layout examples of different rooms and how to accommodate them.

Measure Your Space

Measuring is crucial when space planning for your room. Make sure to measure every wall, window, opening, and door to an accurate layout of your room. It's important to note where all your windows, fireplaces, and openings are to avoid blocking them. If you are not comfortable doing the measuring yourself, La-Z-Boy designers will come out to your home and do the job at no cost to you! You can schedule a consultation with me right through my site.

Consider the Placement

Do: Place your furniture off the wall

Don't: Place your furniture against the wall (sometimes this is absolutely necessary depending on the space)

Placing your furniture slightly off the wall creates a more open concept look. It also makes the room have more of a designer feel to it.

Placing your furniture right against the wall gives it a very closed off look creating a smaller appearance. It makes the space overall look unfinished. This does not apply to all rooms.

Arrange Furniture Around a Focal Point

Focal point is defined as the central of interest or activity. This is the area of a room where the eye is naturally drawn to. This could be your fireplace, TV, or prominent window. Furniture needs to be centered around the focal point to create unity within the space. This is applying the principles of design. Here are some pictures of furniture layouts that are arranged around the focal point.

Create Conversation Areas

If you have the space, creating conversation areas are a great way to create balance and fill space. A conversation area is great for those who want to sit and chat in private during events/parties. Creating conversation areas are as simple as buying a couple of accent chairs and setting an accent table between them in a corner, or placing 4 chairs across from each other, it creates a formal, designer look!

4 chairs across from each other creates a formal look and takes up a good amount of space in a room.

2 accent chairs placed next to a window or in a corner creates another area of conversation and helps to fill the corner that you have no idea what to do with.

Use the Right Size Rug

Rugs tend to be over complicated when it comes to design. A good rule of thumb is to get a rug big enough where the front side of your furniture pieces lays overtop. This creates a balanced look within your room. I will go into rugs more in depth in a future blog post!

Using all these tips to lay out your furniture will create the perfect balanced look! Come into La-Z-Boy today to work with me or any of our designers to help you create your perfect space.
